Nitecore EA11 dead after a drop

One of the lights I edc is my NC EA11. A couple of days ago I dropped it to a concrete floor. While it still worked immediately after I tested it, a few hours later nothing can make it work.

I know it’s not the tailcap nor cell as I have another NIB EA11 and tested the old tailcap.

What could perhaps be the problem?

Lumintop Tool - Question

Hi all. I have the Lumintop Ti tool, but I am not very happy with its M-L-H mode order. I remember hearing about another Lumintop Tool that had a L-M-H order, which I much prefer. Does anyone know what model/version of the Tool has the L-M-H order? Thanks in advance.

Recommendations for budget AA light with good Moonlight/Firefly mode

Anyone got any recommendations for a cheap AA light with a 1 lumen or less mode? I’ve been leaving a light on atop the night stand, ceiling bouncing as a night light. Been using AA alkalines from the junk drawer so I don’t want to use anything expensive.
I’ve been using a UT01 and a Jetbeam Jet-1 MK for the most part, both of which run a little brighter than I care for.

People say I’m a flashaholic like it’s a bad thing…

REVIEW LUMINTOP TOOL AA

PREVIOUS CONSIDERATIONS

Lumintop recently launched the Tool AA, the older sister of the successful Tool AAA. I received this flashlight from Lumintop to do the review. I was impressed by the forcefulness with which I have been asked to do a series of tests (throw it on the ground, freeze it, submerge it, etc ...) that would serve to contrast its hardness and quality. So I have been asked and at risk of being left without the only payment I receive for the hours invested in doing a review (who does from time to time some know it well), I found it a challenge to know if a flashlight designed to be a tool, I would surpass those tests. So I have wrapped the blanket in my head and I have taken to the extreme each one of the requirements ...... Throughout the review we will discover everything ..... In relation to its hardness ..... ...... I have a flashlight that works perfectly with a couple of insignificant war scrapes.

PRESENTATION

The Tool AA comes in a transparent plastic box, with the magnetized lid. Said plastic box is covered by a satin white cardboard case with the logo of the brand and the included model. Once the case is removed we can see inside the box both the flashlight and the various accessories that come with it. We can also appreciate that all the content is protected by white anti-shock material. It is a simple presentation, but elegant.

Inside the box we have a varied series of accessories. In addition to the flashlight, we have a magnetic tail that allows us to use the flashlight as if it were a switch, a white diffuser, O, spare ring, instructions, a lanyard, a protected Lumintop 14500 battery and as a gift a rabbit figure of Lumintop. Everything included is quite good, the diffuser does its role very well, the tail carries a powerful magnet, and the Lanyard I like it a lot, but I think the color is not ideal for this flashlight because of its black color.

CONSTRUCTIVE ASPECTS

Because of its appearance we are facing a flashlight that does not hide its pretensions to be a useful and resistant instrument. Manufactured according to specifications in aeronautical aluminum in grade III, it follows the lines of its sister AAA, with a narrower body widening in the middle part, and even more in the head and in the tail. It takes a little bulky, but efficient clip. The Knurlin is present in those wider sections, which are also where you are going to put your fingers when we have it in your hand. Within its versatility, how could it be otherwise can be used in tail stand mode with both the rear switch and the magnetic tail.

The clip included in the Tool AA is very discreet, but strong and effective. Lets support the entire flashlight on the as if it were a base. The flashlight presents white laser engravings of the brand with the logo and the model that also make an aesthetic contribution. As for the Tail, here we can choose. The Tail with gummy pushbutton has two columns that protect the button from possible impacts and serve as the basis for use in tail stand mode. The push button itself has its Knurling and has an ideal size to activate it. The other tail includes the magnet, and is completely smooth. With this tail, the lantern also becomes a small AA. The diffuser achieves its function perfectly and can be very useful in certain applications next to the magnetic tail or in tail stand mode.

The flashlight can be divided into 3 parts, head, body and tail. The threads come well lubricated and neat. The XPL HD LED is well centered behind the smooth aluminum reflector. The included lens is anti-reflective and ultra-clear.

SIZE AND WEIGHT

Size or sizes rather. The AA tool varies greatly in size if we use it with the back button or with the magnetic Tail. In any case, in both cases it has a perfect size to take as a tool for daily use if we like AA for this task, and of course, also to use it sporadically taking advantage of the various options available. Next it is presented with other models of the Lumintop family and other models AA and 14500

USER INTERFACE

The user interface varies if we use the magnetic tail (Twisty) of the tail with pushbutton (Rear Switch). Otherwise the use is common in this type systems. Always activate the following mode. The rear switch is forward.

The flashlight supports any 14500 battery (button and flat top), alkaline and Nimh. The range of voltage operation of the flashlight means that we have to be careful with the 14500 batteries without protection because we can produce an over discharge.

RESISTANCE TEST

To check everything I have been asked for from lumintop, I made the video with projections, but I included the resistance tests at the beginning of it. The tests that I have included have been the following:

Crash Test: According to lumintop it resists falls of one meter. I've launched it from a meter and a half

Freezing test: The frozen in operation

Immersion test: For more than half an hour you have been in a thermal pool (+ 30º) with salt disinfection

Sequences are also shown in which the flashlight is attached to a metal lamp.

After several blows the only traces of damage are the following (All the photos I have made have been after the falls, all).

BATTERY INCLUDED

The Tool AA comes with a 14500 protected lumintop battery, with a capacity of 750 mAh. The battery comes in a proper storage mode.

I proceeded to load it into the MC3000 and then performed a discharge test until 3v to check if the capacity was as specified. We see that the capacity is somewhat above.

MODES, POWER, RUNTIME, THROW AND THERMAL MANAGEMENT

With the Tool AA we can use, as we have already mentioned, both Nimh and Lithium. Personally I think that with these second the performance is better. Tool AA is much more powerful with lithium, and in addition the runtime is quite acceptable. The results of my sphere show that the flashlight is a bit below what is specified in high mode (@ 30sec), and that we can get more power if we use IMR batteries. In the other modes everything is equal. As to the mode distribution, it might have been better to add a mode around 200 lumens and leave the stop as turbo, although I understand that in the face of the compatibility of different chemical battery uses it could be complicated.

Imagen

I consider the runtime to be more than acceptable, especially with lithium, which allows us in almost half the same luminous flux as with Nimh, and the runtime is much higher. The temperature has not been a problem, and there are no noticeable differences between lithium batteries and IMR batteries. Compared with other market models such as the Zebra SC32 and the Jetbeam Jet I think that its runtime is quite competitive. The regulation is not totally linear

On the other hand, in a model of this size, I think the data obtained in throw is quite good. By the way in my manual there is a typo and it puts a higher number of launch, but in the web of lumintop the correct one appears.

CONCLUSION

Well, once again I am satisfied with a Lumintop brand flashlight. It is again a model that offers what is expected of it. Simplicity and robustness. In short, a good tool. If to this we add the magnificent price that can be achieved, along with the accessories it brings, especially the battery, I think we can not ask for much more.

What could be better?. Maybe the lanyard would have to be black in this case. Lumintop has taken this model in colors, and maybe there is room for the color of my lanyard. The regulation to me personally I like more linear and nothing more to add.

Hi so I picked up an tiara a1 from the current illumn sale.

when I double click to get to turbo mode as indicated in the instructions the flashlight goes into turbo mode for a few seconds then goes firefly for a few seconds then back to what I think is turbo mode for a few seconds then turns off.

it stays like this unless I press and hold to go to firefly then press to get to other levels.

this is with a new AA duracell battery.

Am I missing something here or is the light defective?

thanks for the help.

Currently I’m using a Coast PX25. I’m happy with the power of this light, but I want something smaller and to get away from 3 AAA batteries.

Here’s what I’m wanting:

Readily available off the shelf, nothing custom.
Single AA
Regulated
Memory
Tailcap switch with momentary function
More throw than flood
No magnets
No twisties
Under $50

I found a couple that may work, but would enjoy more input.

Streamlight 88061 ProTac 1L-1AA
ThruNite Archer 1A V3 (I’ve read this is a bit floody though)

Thanks!

My wife is a school nurse and although it rarely comes up, she would like a penlight to allow her to check student’s pupils in the event of a concussion. Already purchased one but it’s really too bright for the purpose. Nice to find one that’s downwardly adjustable to very low lumens.

Review: Thorfire TK05 - single AA LED flashlight

$
0
0

——title:———————————————————————————-
Thorfire TK05 – single AA LED flashlight

——appearance and build quality————————————————————————-

the outside styling is attractive, and not overdone.

it seems to be part of a Thorfire family of styles – looks like a baby TK18.

it seems very well built and likely to be waterproof. (though i didn’t try it)

anodizing is nice and black, though i scratched it when i removed the clip.

i like the front ring styling, it is also useful. by not being solid, you can set the light on its face and light still can get out.

——user interface————————————————————————
one side switch – VERY nice feel to that switch, my favorite side switch of all time. it is not illuminated.
you can position the clip so that it points to the switch.

modes are simple: low, medium, high, in that order
it has mode memory. it cannot be turned off. (sometimes you want it, sometimes you do not.)
sequencing is LMH LMH LMH etc-which is good
single short click turns it on. while on, short click goes through LMH, etc.

double click goes to strobe mode.
strobe is interesting – it varies its flash speed as it runs.
it is hard to get to the strobe mode accidentally – this is a good thing.

long click turns the light off.

mode spacing is decent, it claims 3, 70, 240 lumens, on NiMH AA. i believe that.
14500 lithium produces different, mostly higher levels, i did not test that.
i prefer more levels, including a 1 or less lumen at the low end but it only has 3.

it will shut off when the battery gets too low, which is good.
though you MIGHT wish it would stay on til the end, with disposable batteries.

——light color, pattern, and tint————————————————————————-

light color is fair, it is pretty cold for a ‘neutral’, plus it has some purply and yellowy zones out of the hot spot.

some color options for light output would be nice – specifically a warmer option.

the light pattern is very useable, a wide-ish center hot spot then gradual taper off to the sides, still useable as much as 30 degrees off center.

it has no PWM, which is good. (cheap lights actually flash at a high rate, to do their dimming, this is a bad thing and this light is free of it.)

——misc comments:——————————————————————

it can tailstand. this is good.

you an attach a lanyard.

the clip is ok though it is not reversible.

this light is very short at 84mm, i happen to like shortness over almost everything else, and plan to EDC this light unless i need a LOT of time or brightness, for that i have several 18650 lights, but they are all too big for pocket really. the small ones are unreliable, i have had 3 or 4 of them.

it could be a little shorter with a TIR optic but it is ok in the length dept.

it warns you about ‘HOT’ on the light but it will never get dangerous unless you have lithium in there.

it comes with spare o rings

the manual is in good english, easy to understand mostly

clip cannot be reversed

18 month warranty

——summary:————————————————————————

i like it.

some of the things i don;t like are just personal preferences, or they are different from what i am used to

what i like:
finish
size
light output
side switch = positioning and QUALITY of the switch

suggestion for improvement:
warmer light color, less purple and yellow zones
lower low level, 1 lumen or less
2-3 more intermediate levels

what i don;t like: nothing really, it is pretty good.

——disclaimer:——————————————————————— thorfire did ask me to review this light and gave me a sample to review
but now that you’ve read this far, i hope you can see i’m not playing favorites for that.

After a few days of carry: A few brief thoughts on the new Thorfire TK05

$
0
0

Hi all,
Thorfire provided me their new TK05 single AA/14500 flashlight the Thorfire TK05 to review and after a few days carry here are my

initial impressions

Pros:
nicely machined – i.e. square cut threads are exact, diamond cut grip is nicely done, no visible machining marks evident
side switch has no evident slop – it feels firm and responsive

Cons:
Lack of moonlight mode in what I consider to be a generally indoor EDC light(For my needs a moonlight mode is rarely needed for an outdoor model but used very often indoors.) A driver similar to used in a Thorfire TK15 would had been perfect for this light (A long press in that light from off brings up moonlight mode)

Please disregard the length shown in the picture. The wonky perspective of the shot throws off the lights dimensions. It is Actually just about ~3.5” in overall length. The light is also thinner then it shows.

My early impression is that this light feels nice in hand and use. In the dark, I can intuitively reach for it in my pocket and locate & turn on the side switch. It feels quite pleasant to use. Despite not being ideal for MY uses with it’s lack of a true moonlight mode (which I only use for my AM night time usage in which I carry a different light) the light feels comfortable enough for me to keep the light in my pocket for the majority of the day.

Thorfire has provided a coupon code for 20% off for BLFers(will be available shortly.)

I will update my findings on this light after it has lived in my pocket for a few more days.

Short Review - Utorch UT01 - AA - 4 modes - side switch

$
0
0

utorch UT01 – AA – 4 modes – side switch

pluses:
very small – mostly due to side switch (though the reflector could be shallower),
4 modes instead of 3,
light a nice neutral color, no color artifacts
no memory [starts on low] 3 blinky modes instead of one (not that i ever use them but still, not a useless feature )

frequently on sale for $10
beam is a good balance between hotspot and floody
tailstanding is easy
clip can reverse (body can also reverse) so you can find the side switch easily

minuses:
switch is rubber, not metal,
longish press for off,
low is 3 lumens, not a moonlight (<1)

no memory (can;t decide if i like it or not, the astrolux lets you set memory on or off)

blinky modes (sometimes like them, sometimes do not – at least these are fairly easy to avoid)

anyway i really like a very small, multimode light

i’m going to try shifting away from my former EDC for a while (astrolux S1) – to see if small makes up for brightness and run time
it might!

i did not try – waterproofing, beam shots, drop tests, power measurements, run time, or lumens, or 14500 battery – just NiMH enerloop

Zebralight SC5c mk II 4000k ugly green tint

I was so excited to receive my SC5c with XP-L2 4000k with 93-95CRI but once I turned it on, I was immediately disappointed. I compared it side by side with my Armytek Wizard v3 XP-L warm white, BLF A6 XP-L and Emisar D4 XP-L Hi both with 4000k and it was clear that the Zebralight was so much more green than the others which have a beautiful peach tone. I wish I bought the SC5w MK II with 4500k CRI 80 instead. Maybe it wouldn’t have been so greenish yellow. Yuck. The light is bright though. It is very close in brightness to my Thrunite Archer 2A v3 neutral white.
